Golden Syrup Steamed Pudding

Golden Syrup Steamed Pudding is my all time favourite dessert.  I’ve been eating this particular recipe since I was young and I hope to pass it on to my boys for them to make for their families one day.  Serve it with ice cream or cream!

  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 40 grams Butter
  • 2 cups Flour Self-Raising
  • 4 tbsp Golden Syrup
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1/4 cup Milk


  1. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs one at a time.
  3. Fold sifted ingredients and milk alternatively into creamed mixture.
  4. Grease large base, add syrup/jam.
  5. Spoon in mixture, cover. Steam 1.5 hours. Serves 6.


Microwave Directions:

You can also make this in the microwave, use the above directions, but place the mixture in a microwave proof container (preferably a ring cake microwave dish) - cover with plastic wrap and microwave for 7 minutes.

Recipe Hint and Tips:

  • If you don't have a steamer - place in a greased noodle bowl and place in a large stockpot half filled with boiling water - works just the same. Make sure it has a firm fitting lid.
  • Golden Syrup Steamed Pudding is not suitable for freezing.
  • Leftover pudding can be covered and refrigerated for up to 24 hours.  Steamed Puddings are notorious for drying out so they really don't last long!
