A mother has delivered her own baby in the midst of Hurricane Irma.
What could be tougher than going into labour? Going into labour in the middle of a natural disaster!
This is what one Florida mum had to go through as she went into labour just hours before Hurricane Irma was set to hit the city.
The mother, from Miami, who hasn’t been identified in the media, called emergency services but strong winds and competing emergencies made it impossible for rescue crews to get through to her, so they guided her through the birth over the phone.
Paramedics, a dispatcher and a doctor at a Miami hospital who were on a conference call talked through the entire event with the mother. However, the mother did all the work herself, including delivering the placenta and cutting the umbilical cord.
“We weren’t able to respond. So she delivered the placenta, also,” Assistant Fire Chief Eloy Garcia told the Miami Herald. “Dispatch told her how to tie it off. She’s stable at home. We made contact with the assistant medical director here. Talked things through.”
The mother successfully delivered her own healthy baby girl, who was rushed to the hospital as soon as road crews said it was safe enough to travel.
In its Twitter account, Miami-Dade Police tweeted a photo of the baby. They wrote:

The Miami Fire Brigade tweeted that out of 41 emergency calls they received that night, they were only able to respond to three.
